Green Tift

Moultrie Technical College is starting a new Green Technology Program in fall 2010 thanks to a 2 year $3,753,579 grant from the United States Department of Labor. "Green Technology" refers to means of energy production that is environmentally friendly or to technology itself that is considered less harmful than more traditional technologies. MTC was the only entity in the state of Georgia to receive a grant such as this. The grant will allow us to develop a program that exists nowhere else in the state.

The purpose of the grant is to fund workforce development projects that promote new jobs and economic growth by preparing workers for careers in energy efficiency industries. The Green Tift project will target four areas of interest which includes biofuels and biomass, energy efficiency assessment, renewable electrical power (solar, wind and geothermal), and green construction.

Tift county residents will have the opportunity to take advantage of a variety of support services while in classes. A shuttle bus will pick up students in various public places around Tifton. Also, for those who have children under 5 and need childcare, we may be able to help. Participants will receive academic advisement along with career placement services to help overcome barriers to employment. Through this support system, students will receive certifications and on the job training that will better their chances of employment.

The grant is Tift county residents centered but we encourage anyone to enroll in the Green Technology program as a regular student. Classes will be available on the Tift county campus and they will take place morning, afternoon, and night. We are expecting to have 6 new technical certificates of credit, 6 new diplomas, 1 degree, and possibly more. Endowment from this grant allowed Moultrie Tech to hire 4 new instructors that specialize in the areas of interest.

The main goal of the grant is to mold participants into highly skilled workers who will have the chance to receive higher wages, and in turn, advance the region’s economic competitiveness and ability to retain current industry and attract new industry. Moultrie Tech leads a list of partners such as UGA and ABAC. With their help, MTC is striving to build a greener tomorrow!
